Workers day: Gov Oshiomhole increases minimum wage

It was cheering news for public workers in Edo state, when the state governor Adams Oshiomhole, announced a new minimum wage with effect from Sunday, May 1, 2016.
Oshiomhole who was addressing a rally organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), to mark this year’s Workers Day’ anniversary at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin, announced an increment from the present N18, 000 minimum wage to N25, 000.
The governor also promised prompt payment of salary arrears of staff of local government councils in the state, adding that plans have been concluded to pay staff of Egor local government council who are presently been owned 13 months salaries within the next two weeks.‎
“With effect from today, the new minimum wage for government workers shall now be N25,000, and the new minimum wage ‎will cut across board,” he said.

The workers before the announcement, expressed apathy, dissatisfaction over the poor welfare and seeming government’s insensitivity to the welfare of its workers.
They however jumped for joy and happily matched in appreciation of the new minimum wage as announced by the governor.
Explaining the reason why the council was omitted from the bailout to local government councils in 2015, he gave the assurance that the Edo government had been meeting with the Central Bank of Nigeria and that within the next two weeks, the funds would be released and staff of the council paid in full.
He also explained the reason behind the non-appointment of care taker committee for the councils after the end of the tenure of the immediate past local government chairmen.
According to him, “rather than appoint caretaker committee for the council’s and pay them because they are politicians, we directed the head of personel of the councils to hold forth so that those monies would use to run the councils and pay salaries.”
He said Edo workers would still get their salaries before the end of each month even when the price of oil goes to zero percent, adding that he would not use his office to put hardship on any of his worker.
The Workers’ Day rally was however marred by apathy and low turn out of workers.
Earlier in their respective speeches, the chairman of NLC, Comrade Emma Ademokun and his TUC counterpart, Comrade Ohue Marshal, expressed concern over the persistent scarcity of petroleum product, epileptic power supply and illegal electricity tariff increase, spiral increase in cost of living, insecurity, kidnapping, rampaging herdsmen, Boko haram, irregular payment of salaries resulting in accumulation of arrears, growing rate of unemployment with the attendant social vices‎.

The deputy governor of Edo state, Dr. Pius Odubu, escaped death by the whiskers when gunmen opened fire on him and his entourage in Auchi, Etsako West local government area of the state.
The Nation reports that the incident happened on Saturday, April 30, as the deputy governor was receiving a delegation at the secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Auchi.
Five persons were said to have been critically injured
The gunmen reportedly invaded the secretariat and opened fire on the deputy governor and others at the meeting, a few minutes after Governor Adams Oshiomhole and Odubu left a party organised by Damian Lawani, representative of the Estako central constituency in the House of Assembly.
A policeman, an operative of the Department of State Security and three other persons including the guard commander of the deputy governor’s police team who covered his boss during the invasion were critically injured during the attack and were rushed to the hospital.
Six delegates and three security details attached to Odubu are said to be in critical conditions and are receiving treatment at Faith Medical Centre in Auchi.
A source who spoke to The Punch said Odubu was not injured in the attack.
“We ran for our dear lives. They injured a policeman, an SSS operative and three civilians and destroyed canopies. We learnt that they were paid N1m to carry out the attack,” the source said.
Odubu had formally declared his intention to contest the September 10 gubernatorial election in the state under the All Progressives Congress last Wednesday, April 27.
People speculated that this did not go down well with Governor Oshiomhole.
It was alleged that Dr. Odubu plotted with some native doctors to kill Oshiomhole but he denied the report saying, it was the handiwork of mischief makers and blackmailers who are bent on destroying his cordial relationship with his boss.

Meet the Nigerian woman who was chosen to design Queen Elizabeth's 90th birthday cake

Owner of Edible Spices, Anuoluwapo Adebanjo,  has revealed how she was chosen to design the Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday cake for the British High Commission in Lagos.
She shared the post below on her Facebook page :

“YOU are not man that YOU should lie…over 10 years ago, God gave me a dream bigger than my capacity, I have never tried to figure it out, I serve a great and mighty God, I just knew I had to wait for the right time… He told me I won’t have to beg for it, neither will I pay my way to success(and my pride began, yes I’m proud, I have the backing of the Greatest God) all I needed to do was just to rest and believe in his mighty words. I have been told severally to send cake samples to some celebrities for hype(yes it’s good when you are building a brand) but I don’t believe in it, I believe if my work is good enough, with God, kings, celebrities will sought after my brand not for self pity (if I have to send to a top person I admire, i’ll do with no strings attached, I do some anonymously anyways, you might be the next person..lol)
I have gotten several requests from media houses to pay for news paper publications/Tv interviews so that I can be featured (it’s good for business but I won’t do that maybe for now). It has never been about fame and quick money(those who know me can testify) I believe in process, I know God wants to take me through a part only him will take glory for… some people ask how can a self taught cake maker be this good? Well I have told you severally I’m God taught, I don’t rely on my own understanding, my self and the Holy Spirit hold hands when I’m working on a cake ( this is my secret o trust me). So I was contacted last week to Make a Cake for the Queen’s Birthday Party, I had no idea what the design would be until yesterday evening… I was told dignitaries have been taking pictures of the cake at the British deputy high commissioner’s residence, A great achievement! To God alone be the glory. I’m not where God wants me to be yet but I’m grateful I’m following through bitter-sweet process.
Happy 90th birthday to Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth ll

You may kiss the bride!!!!

“I set up the entire wedding party for a formal shot as I do with every wedding, and then asked the bride and groom to kiss,” photographer Leah Bullard told.
“Since Anderson had been calling herself the bride the whole day, she assumed I was referring to her and went in for a kiss too.”
Bullard described the moment as “hilarious,” adding that “children in weddings always bring an extra light to the day.”
This is what I call stealing the show from the celebrants but in a Cool way though
