BREAKFAST AND IT'S IMPORTANCE

WHY IS BREAKFAST IMPORTANT?
"Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince and Dine like a Pauper"
It's a well known phrase, but do you follow it?

During a busy morning, it's easy to let breakfast fall low in your list of priorities, but taking just a few minutes to have something to eat can really make a difference to your day. If you don't have time to eat before leaving the house, we have lots of breakfast ideas that can be eaten on-the-go or when you get to work.
Breakfast provides many benefits to our health and wellbeing
Breakfast provides the body and brain with fuel after an overnight fast - that's where its name originates, breaking the fast! Without breakfast you are effectively running on empty, like trying to start the car with no petrol!

Nutritionists advise:
breakfast should be eaten within two hours of waking
a healthy breakfast should provide calories in the range of 20-35% of your guideline daily allowance (GDA).
Apart from providing us with energy, breakfast foods are good sources of important nutrients such as calcium, iron and B vitamins as well as protein and fibre. The body needs these essential nutrients and research shows that if these are missed at breakfast, they are less likely to be compensated for later in the day. Fruit and vegetables are good sources of vitamins and minerals so try to include a portion of your daily five at breakfast, whether that be a banana or glass of fruit juice.

Breakfast can be good for waistline too, research shows those who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight and more likely to be within their ideal weight range compared with breakfast skippers. If you skip breakfast, you're more likely to reach for high sugar and fatty snacks mid-morning.

Cognitive function
Breakfast also restores glucose levels, an essential carbohydrate that is needed for the brain to function. Many studies have shown how eating breakfast can improve memory and concentration levels and it can also make us happier as it can improve mood and lower stress levels. In studies amongst children, breakfast can improve attainment, behaviour and has been linked to improved grades. Just like any other organ in the body, the brain needs energy to work at it's best!

Energy needs
People's energy needs vary depending on activity levels and life stage but typically men require more energy than women. Growing children require a lot of energy, as an example boys aged 7-10yrs should consume approx. 1970 kcals per day, and girls aged 7-10yrs should consume approx. 1740 kcals. For adults, men require approx. 2500 kcals and women approx. 2000 kcals per day.

Long term health
EATING BREAKFAST HAS LONG TERM HEALTH BENEFITS. IT CAN REDUCE OBESITY, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, HEART DISEASE AND DIABETES.
NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE
Breakfast is an excellent occasion to eat together as a family when possible. Establishing good breakfast habits in childhood and maintaining them throughout adolescence may be an important factor in reducing the prevalence of breakfast skipping and developing good eating habits that last a lifetime.

So, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day!

RISK FACTORS FOR OBESITY

Health risks associated with obesity

Osteoarthritis in a hip joint
Obesity is an important risk factor for osteoarthritis in most joints, especially at the knee joint (the most important site for osteoarthritis). Obesity confers a nine times increased risk in knee joint osteoarthritis in women.

Osteoarthritis risk is also linked to obesity for other joints. A recent study indicated that obesity is a strong determinant of thumb base osteoarthritis in both sexes. Data suggest that metabolic and mechanical factors mediate the effects of obesity on joints (University of Bristol).

Coronary heart disease
Obesity carries a penalty of an associated adverse cardiovascular risk profile. Largely as a consequence of this, it is associated with an excess occurrence of cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality. (Department of Preventive Medicine, University of Tennessee)

Gallbladder disease
Being overweight is a significant risk factor for gallstones. In such cases, the liver over-produces cholesterol, which is then delivered into the bile causing it to become supersaturated. Some evidence suggests that specific dietary factors (saturated fats and refined sugars) are the primary culprit in these cases (University of Maryland Medical Center)

High blood pressure (Hypertension)
There are multiple reasons why obesity causes hypertension, but it seems that excess adipose (fat) tissue secretes substances that are acted on by the kidneys, resulting in hypertension. Moreover, with obesity there are generally higher amounts of insulin produced. Excess insulin elevates blood pressure. (Weight.com)

High total cholesterol, high levels of triglycerides (Dyslipidemia)
The primary dyslipidemia related to obesity is characterized by increased triglycerides, decreased HDL levels, and abnormal LDL composition. (Howard BV, Ruotolo G, Robbins DC.)

Respiratory problems
Obesity can also cause respiratory problems. Breathing is difficult as the lungs are decreased in size and the chest wall becomes very heavy and difficult to lift. (Medical College of Wisconsin)

Several cancers
In 2002, approximately 41,000 new cases of cancer in the USA were thought to be due to obesity. In other words, about 3.2% of all new cancers are linked to obesity (Polednak AP. Trends in incidence rates for obesity-associated cancers in the U.S. Cancer Detection and Prevention 2003; 27(6):415-421)

Sleep apnea
Obesity has been found to be linked to sleep apnea. Also, weight reduction has been associated with comparable reductions in the severity of sleep apnea. (NHLBI)

Stroke
Rising obesity rates have been linked to more strokes among women aged 35 to 54. (Medical News Today - "Stroke Increase And Obesity Linked Among Middle-Aged Women")

Type 2 diabetes
One of the strongest risk factors for type 2 diabetes is obesity, and this is also one of the most modifiable as it can be partially controlled through diet and exercise. (Medical News Today - "Researchers Verify Link Between Type 2 Diabetes And Diet" )

TREATMENT OF OBESITY

OBESITY treatments have two objectives:

To achieve a healthy weight.
To maintain that healthy weight.
People who are obese are often discouraged because they think they have to lose a lot of weight before any benefits are experienced. This is not true. Any obese person who loses just five to ten per cent of their body weight will have significant improvement in health - this would mean between 12-25 pounds for an obese person who weighs 250 pounds.

It is important for patients to realize that a small drop in weight is a good start and a great achievement. Experts have found that obese people who lose weight slowly and constantly, say one or two pounds each week, are more successful in keeping their weight down when they have reached their target weight.

According to the Mayo Clinic, successful and permanent weight loss is best achieved as a result of increased physical activity, changing how and when you eat, and modifying your behavior. Some patients may be prescribed medication, while others might undergo weight-loss surgery.

Dietary changes to combat obesity
The Mayo Clinic advises obese people to reduce their total daily calorie intake and to consume more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. It is important that your diet is varied - you still need to feed yourself, and should continue to enjoy the tastes of different foods. The consumption of sugar, certain refined carbohydrates and some fats should be reduced significantly.

Ideally, you should work with your doctor, a dietician, and/or a well-known weight-loss program.

Trying to lose weight quickly by crash-dieting carries the following risks:

You may develop health problems
You will probably experience vitamin deficiencies
You chances of failure are significantly higher
People who are seriously obese may be prescribed a very low calorie liquid diet. These must be done with a health care professional.

Physical activity
The more you move your body the more calories you burn. To lose a kilogram of fat you need to burn 8,000 calories (1 pound of fat = 3,500 calories). Walking briskly is a good way to start increasing your physical activity if you are obese. Combining increased physical activity with a good diet will significantly increase your chances of losing weight successfully and permanently!

Try to find activities which you can fit into your daily routine. Anything that becomes part of your daily life, weaved into your existing lifestyle, is more likely to become a long-term habit. If you use an elevator, try getting off one or two floors before your destination and walking the rest. You could try the same when driving your car or taking any form of public transport - get off earlier and walk that bit more.

If any of your regular shops are within walking distance, try leaving your car at home. Several surveys indicated that the majority of urban car trips outside the rush hours are less than a mile long - we can all walk a mile, and should!

If you are very obese, are unfit, or have some health problems, make sure you check with a health care professional before increasing your physical activity.

Prescription medications for losing weight
Prescription medications should really only be considered as a last resort. If the patient finds it extremely hard to shed the pounds, or if his obesity has reached such a point as to significantly undermine his health, then prescription drugs may become an option.

According to the Mayo Clinic, prescription medications should only be considered if:

Other strategies to lose weight have failed
The patient's BMI is over 27 and he also has diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea.
The patient's BMI is over 30
There are two approved drugs a physician may consider, Sibutramine (Meridia in USA/Canada, Reductil in Europe and much of the world) or Orlistat (Xenical). Bear in mind that as soon as you stop taking these drugs the overweight problem generally comes back - they have to be taken indefinitely. Some patients may not respond to these drugs, while others may find their beneficial effects may lessen somewhat after a few months.

Weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery)
Weight loss surgery (WLS) is also known as Bariatric Surgery. It comes from the Greek work baros, which means weight.

WLS is a development of cancer/ulcer operations that consisted of removing part of a patient's stomach or small intestine. Those cancer/ulcer patients subsequently lost weight after surgery. Doctors decided the procedure might be beneficial for morbidly obese patients.

A gastric band is becoming an increasingly common treatment for obesity
In 2008 about 220,000 bariatric operations were carried out in the USA (American Society for Bariatric Surgery). As obesity levels in America and many other parts of the world grow, so does the number of bariatric procedures.

About 15 million people in the U.S. have morbid obesity; only 1% of the clinically eligible population is being treated for morbid obesity through bariatric surgery. According to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, the average female surgery patient weighs about 300 pounds.

The American Society for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery says that Bariatric surgery can improve or resolve more than 30 obesity-related conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, hypertension and high cholesterol.

Basically, bariatric surgery alters your stomach or small intestine so that you are unable to consume much food in one sitting. This reduces the total number of calories you consume each day, thus helping to lose weight.

There are two types of bariatric surgeries:

Restrictive procedures - These make your stomach smaller. The surgeon may use a gastric band, staples, or both. After the operation the patient cannot consume more than about one cup of food during each sitting, significantly reducing his food intake. Over time, some patients' stomachs may stretch and they are gradually able to consumer larger quantities.

Researchers from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, reported in the journal Annals of Surgery that laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (lap banding) was found to be a successful long-term solution to obesity after carrying out a 15-year follow-up on obese patients.
Malabsorptive procedures - Parts of the digestive system, especially the first part of the small intestine (duodenum) or the mid-section (jejunum), are bypassed. Doctors may also reduce the size of the stomach. This procedure is generally more effective than restrictive procedures. However, the patient has a higher risk of experiencing vitamin/mineral deficiencies because overall absorption is reduced.
Combining two hormones into one molecule, a possible obesity treatment
Scientists from Indiana University managed to combine GLP-1, a digestive hormone, with the hormone estrogen with promising obesity treatment results in an animal experiment.

They published their findings in the journal Nature Medicine (November 2012).

The authors wrote "We find that combining the hormones as a single molecule dramatically enhanced their efficacy and their safety. The combination improves the ability to lower body weight and the ability to manage glucose, and it does so without showing the hallmark toxicities associated with estrogen."

The scientists believe that the combination of nuclear hormones and other peptides as substances for therapeutic usage is a significant and promising opportunity for research.

Making white cells more like brown cells
Scientists from the Perelman School of Medicine found a protein switch that determines whether precursor fat cells become white or brown fat cells.

Brown fat cells burn calories, they produce heat
White fat cells store calories in the all-too-obvious deposits that plague the growing numbers of obese people
They wonder whether it might be possible to reprogram white fat cells to become a little more like brown fat cells.

Lead researcher, Patrick Seale, explained that brown fat cells, being the ones that produce heat in the body, are protective against obesity as well as type 2 diabetes

OBESITY

Obesity is a condition where a person has accumulated so much body fat that it might have a negative effect on their health.

If a person's bodyweight is at least 20% higher than it should be, he or she is considered obese. If your Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 25 and 29.9 you are considered overweight. If your BMI is 30 or over you are considered obese. If you're wondering what your ideal weight might be, take a look at our article, how much should I weigh?

What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
The body mass index (BMI) is a statistical measurement derived from your height and weight. Although it is considered to be a useful way to estimate healthy body weight, it does not measure the percentage of body fat. The BMI measurement can sometimes be misleading - a muscleman may have a high BMI but have much less fat than an unfit person whose BMI is lower. However, in general, the BMI measurement can be a useful indicator for the 'average person'.

Why do people become obese?
People can become obese for many different reasons. Lets look at some of the most common ones:

1) Consuming too many calories.
These days people are eating much more food than in previous generations. This used to be the case just in developed nations - however, the trend has spread worldwide.

Despite billions of dollars being spent on public awareness campaigns that attempt to encourage people to eat healthily, the majority of us continue to overeat. In 1980 14% of the adult population of the USA was obese; by 2000 the figure reached 31% (The Obesity Society).

In the USA, the consumption of calories increased from 1,542 per day for women in 1971 to 1,877 per day in 2004. The figures for men were 2,450 in 1971 and 2,618 in 2004. Most people would expect this increase in calories to consist of fat - not so! Most of the increased food consumption has consisted of carbohydrates (sugars). Increased consumption of sweetened drinks has contributed significantly to the raised carbohydrate intake of most young American adults over the last three decades. The consumption of fast-foods has tripled over the same period.

Various other factors are also said to have contributed to America's increased calorie and carbohydrate intake:

In 1984 the Reagan administration freed up advertising on sweets and fast foods for children - regulations had previously set limits.
Agricultural policies in most of the developed world have led to much cheaper foods.
The US Farm Bill meant that the source of processed foods came from subsidized wheat, corn and rice. Corn, wheat and rice became much cheaper than fruit and vegetables.
2) Leading a sedentary lifestyle
With the arrival of televisions, computers, video games, remote controls, washing machines, dish washers and other modern convenience devices, people are commonly are leading a much more sedentary lifestyle compared to their parents and grandparents.

Some decades ago shopping consisted of walking down the road to the high street where one could find the grocers, bakers, banks, etc. As large out-of-town supermarkets and shopping malls started to appear, people moved from using their feet to driving their cars to get their provisions. In some countries, such as the USA, dependence on the car has become so strong that many people will drive even if their destination is only half-a-mile away.

The less you move around the fewer calories you burn. However, this is not only a question of calories. Physical activity has an effect on how your hormones work, and hormones have an effect on how your body deals with food. Several studies have shown that physical activity has a beneficial effect on your insulin levels - keeping them stable. Unstable insulin levels are closely associated with weight gain.

Children who have a television in their bedroom are much more likely to be obese or overweight than kids who do not, researchers from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, LA, reported in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (December 2012 issue).

If you would like to know your daily calorie intake for your weight and height, take a look at our article how many calories should I eat a day?

3) Not sleeping enough
Research has suggested that if you do not sleep enough your risk of becoming obese doubles. Research was carried out at Warwick Medical School at the University of Warwick. The risk applies to both adults and children. Professor Francesco Cappuccio and team reviewed evidence in over 28,000 children and 15,000 adults. Their evidence clearly showed that sleep deprivation significantly increased obesity risk in both groups.

Professor Cappuccio said:

"The 'epidemic' of obesity is paralleled by a 'silent epidemic' of reduced sleep duration with short sleep duration linked to increased risk of obesity both in adults and in children. These trends are detectable in adults as well as in children as young as 5 years."

Professor Cappuccio explains that sleep deprivation may lead to obesity through increased appetite as a result of hormonal changes. If you do not sleep enough you produce Ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates appetite. Lack of sleep also results in your body producing less Leptin, a hormone that suppresses appetite.

4) Endocrine disruptors, such as some foods that interfere with lipid metabolism.
A team from the University of Barcelona (UB) led by Dr Juan Carlos Laguna published a study in the journal Hepatology that provides clues to the molecular mechanism through which fructose (a type of sugar) in beverages may alter lipid energy metabolism and cause fatty liver and metabolic syndrome.

Fructose is mainly metabolized in the liver, the target organ of the metabolic alterations caused by the consumption of this sugar. In this study, rats receiving fructose-containing beverages presented a pathology similar to metabolic syndrome, which in the short term causes lipid accumulation (hypertriglyceridemia) and fatty liver, and eventually leads to hypertension, resistance to insulin, diabetes and obesity.

Poorly balanced diets and the lack of physical exercise are key factors in the increase of obesity and other metabolic diseases in modern societies. In epidemiological studies in humans, the effect of the intake of fructose-sweetened beverages also seems to be more intense in women. (From - "New Data On Fructose-Sweetened Beverages And Hepatic Metabolism").

Although there appears to be a consensus on the negative effects of fructose-sweetened beverages there is still some debate over the effects of fructose versus high fructose corn syrup - two studies of note are:

AMA Finds High Fructose Syrup Unlikely To Be More Harmful To Health Than Other Caloric Sweeteners
Fructose Sweetened Drinks Increase Nonfasting Triglycerides In Obese Adults
Fructose effect on the brain may promote obesity - researchers from Yale University School of Medicine compared the effects of fructose and glucose on the brain with MRI scans and found that high fructose diets may be behind the current obesity epidemic.

In an article published in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association), the authors said they found that regions in the brain that regulate appetite became active when people consumed glucose, but remained inactive when they ingested fructose. When those regions become active, they release hormones that produce feelings of satiety (fullness) - in other words, the hormones tell you to stop eating.

5) Lower rates of smoking (smoking suppresses appetite)
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) "Not everyone gains weight when they stop smoking. Among people who do, the average weight gain is between 6 and 8 pounds. Roughly 10 percent of people who stop smoking gain a large amount of weight - 30 pounds or more."

6) Medications that make patients put on weight
According to an article in Annals of Pharmacotherapy, some medications cause weight gain. "Clinically significant weight gain is associated with some commonly prescribed medicines. There is wide interindividual variation in response and variation of the degree of weight gain within drug classes. Where possible, alternative therapy should be selected, especially for individuals predisposed to overweight and obesity." (The Annals of Pharmacotherapy: Vol. 39, No. 12, pp. 2046-2054. DOI 10.1345/aph.1G33)

7) Is obesity self-perpetuating?
The longer a person is overweight, the harder it becomes for them to lose weight. Many have wondered whether obesity itself becomes a permanent state, i.e. does obesity promote obesity?. Researchers from the University of Michigan and the National Council of Science and Technology (COINCET) in Argentina, reported in the Journal of Clinical Investigation that in animal experiments, obesity seems to become a self-perpetuating state.

They found that the “normal” body weight of mice that become obese starts going up; their bodies’ perception of normal weight becomes a heavier than before, regardless of whether they are made to go on diets which had made them lose weight.

Senior author, Malcolm J. Low, M.D., Ph.D., said "Our model demonstrates that obesity is in part a self-perpetuating disorder and the results further emphasize the importance of early intervention in childhood to try to prevent the condition whose effects can last a lifetime. Our new animal model will be used in pinpointing the reasons why most adults find it exceedingly difficult to maintain meaningful weight loss from dieting and exercise alone."

In addition to this study, research published in the journal Nature Communications in 2015 suggests that weight loss is harder when we carry more fat. The scientists suggest that the more fat we carry, the more our bodies appear to produce a protein that blocks our ability to burn fat.

8) Obesity gene
A faulty gene, called FTO, makes 1 in every 6 people overeat, a team of scientists from University College London reported in the Journal of Clinical Investigation (July 2013 issue).

Lead researcher, Racher Batterham, explained that people who carry the FTO gene variant tend to eat too much, prefer high-energy, fatty foods, and are usually obese. They also appear to take much longer to reach satiety (feeling of being full).

Report says UK newspaper accuses Buhari's ally of stealing N142 bn

UK newspaper Daily Mail has again took a swipe at President Muhammadu Buhari for his war against corruption.

The paper says that while the Nigerian leader is seen as leading the fight against graft, some shocking accusations swirl around one of his close friends.

Nigeria’s transport minister and former governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi, is said to have bankrolled Buhari’s presidential campaign.

Nigerian media reportedly described Amaechi as ‘ATM’ – the American term for cash machine – because of his power to give big sums of money at short notice.

Ex-governor keeps his post despite being blamed for stealing £338m (N96bn) by a commission probing the sale of state assets.

A part of diverted money is probably to have come from UK taxpayers, who gave Nigeria £1billion (N285bn) in aid over five years to 2014.

Individually, Amaechi is blamed for misappropriating £140million (N40bn) of state funds into Buhari’s presidential campaign, with reports he paid for media, consultants and private jets.

The breakdown of 2016 budget showed that the Buhari’s administration earmarked £16million (N4,5bn) for the renovation and maintenance of the president’s official residence, Aso Rock Guest House, in the capital Abuja.

There was also a request for billions of naira for building a VIP wing at a hospital used by families of the president and his ministerial team.
However, Amaechi has rejected the accusations against him.

When British Prime Minister David Cameron was caught on camera last week before an anti-corruption summit defining Nigeria as ‘fantastically corrupt’, Buhari rallied to Cameron’s defence by agreeing with him.

But the Nigerian presidency said that previous governments were corrupt, not the incumbent one.

What EFCC did to the mansion of former chief of air staff!!

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken over a mansion which belonged to Air Marshal Mohammed Umar (retd) who is a former chief of air staff.
The Punch reports that the EFCC sealed the house which is located on 1853 Deng Xiano Ping Street, off Mahathir Mohammed Street, Asokoro Extension in Abuja.
According to the EFCC, the house is worth about N860m.
The EFCC had alleged before an Abuja Federal High Court that, “while being the Chief of Air Staff, Nigerian Air Force, between March and April 2012, in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of the court did the accused (Umar) use the United States dollars equivalent of the sum of N860,000,000 (Eight hundred and sixty million naira) removed from the accounts of the Nigerian Air Force to purchase for yourself a property lying and situate at plot 1853 Deng Xiano Ping Street, off Mahathir Mohammed street, Asokoro extension Abuja.”

Umar is one of top ranking military officials suspected of siphoning money meant for the force and are facing investigation for charges bordering on corruption.
The EFCC also claimed that Umar removed N700 million from the accounts of the airforce to purchase a property at 14, Vistula Close, off Panama Street, Maitama, Abuja, while another N500 million was removed to purchase a property comprising a four-bedroomed duplex at Road 3B, Street 2, Mabushi Ministers Hill, Abuja.
Although the Maitama and Mabushi mansions allegedly belonging to the retired officer have not been sealed, the guards at the house confirmed the houses belonged to him.
He was arraigned for an alleged N7bn scam, had denied all the allegations levelled against him.
The diversion of fund meant for the procurement of arms has seen the EFCC conduct extensive investigations into the financial engagement of the air force and the Nigerians army. However, there was tension when preliminary investigation began in the navy.
The Federal Ministry of Finance had on Thursday directed the anti-graft agency to investigate the payroll of the military.
The ministry said the investigation followed revelations Alex Badeh who is a former chief of defence staff at the Federal High Court in Abuja, that N558.2m was diverted monthly s into private pockets.
An EFCC source said: “We were investigating only the army and the air force because they were the ones given funds to fight Boko Haram. Since the battle has only been in the North-East where there is no piracy, the navy was not really involved in the arms deal and we therefore did not focus on them during investigations.
“However, with this new directive, we will go after the navy. We are aware that part of the NIMASA fraud also involved some navy personnel. We will now do a full-scale investigation.”

Angry youths sets senator's house on fire

Angry youths in Kano have reportedly set Senator Kabiru Gaya’s house on fire over alleged breach of election promises.

Premium Times reports that the youths in their thousands stormed the Kano residence of the senator on Wednesday as well as that of Abdulahi Gaya, a member of the state House of Representatives representing Gaya local government area of the state, before seizing the properties belonging to them.

During the raid, the youths burnt down properties badly and despite the fact that they had initially appeared to have dispersed, later regrouped and became more violent.

It was also gathered that they set fire on the campaign office of Gaya, the House member as the youths said they were angry because the pair refused to provide the basic amenities as they promised prior to the 2015 elections.

Tanimu Sani Gaya, who spoke on behalf of the angry youths, noted that before the lawmakers were elected, politicians in the local government area had an agreement that they would solve all the challenges facing the district.

But, after one year since their election, residents of the area still trek kilometres to get water while hundreds of youth still roam about without jobs.

The police spokesperson, Magaji Majiya, confirmed the attacks, saying the officers were still battling to push back the youth.

The pair were not available to respond to the issue on Wednesday, as the reps member did not respond to phone calls while Senator Gaya was said to be away in the United States.

Recently. a senator was also reportedly attacked by angry youths for supporting embattled Senate president, Bukola Saraki, who is presently standing trials at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) over false assets declaration.

Fani Kayode to remain in EFCC custody for 14 days

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has obtained a remand order to keep a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, in custody for the next two weeks.

The remand order is, however, renewable after 14 days depending on the outcome of investigations.

Fani-Kayode is being investigated by the EFCC for allegedly receiving N840m when he was the Director of Publicity for the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation in 2015.

The money, which Fani-Kayode confessed to receiving, was said to have emanated from the account of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The commission had recently frozen the ex-minister’s Zenith Bank account with number 1004735721 domiciled at Maitama, Abuja.

Fani-Kayode had told our correspondent that the PDP leadership gave him the impression that the money was sourced from private individuals.

He said, “I served as the director of publicity of the Jonathan campaign organisation and I was told to set up an account for the directorate, which I did.

I never received money from the CBN but like all the other directors, we received money from the director of finance.”

However, a detective told our correspondent that the EFCC was working on the assumption that the ex-minister might have received more than N840m.

The source said, “Besides the N840m that Fani-Kayode admitted to receiving, we believe he got more.

Thanks to BVN (Bank Verification Number), we can trace all other accounts that he has.

We will trace the transaction history and see how much he truly received and how much was from the public funds.

“There are other petitions against the former minister and he will be grilled. In the coming days, we will reveal the outcome of investigations.”

When asked if the investigation of the former minister was a witch-hunt as alleged, the detective said such excuses were not tenable in court.

Artiste Zeez to pay back the money spent on him by former record label

Artistes on signings or contract are going to take it very serious and personal after Zeez turn of event.

Following the issue between singer Zeez and his former record label, HF Music being dragged to court back in 2015, a verdict has finally been reached.
The ‘Same ni’ crooner, has been ordered by a Lagos High court to refund the sum of N22.3 million Naira to HF Music following his inability to adhere to his contract with them.
HF Music, was said to have sued the singer for his failure to record songs as earlier contained in his contract.

According to a legal document obtained by Pulse on the issue,it states that

The  presiding judge, Honourable Justice B.A. Oke-Lawal (Mrs) in the case brought before the High Court of Lagos State, ordered that Zeez, real name – Kingsley Elikpo, should refund the sum of N22,378,605.70 (Twenty-Two Million, Three Hundred and Seventy-Eight Thousand, Six Hundred and Five Naira and Seventy Kobo) being the total amount spent by HF Music through various advances made to and on his behalf, from the commencement date of his contract with the label until the point when it was breached by him.

A source at HF Music who spoke with Pulse said:

This judgment is expected to have serious implication on the Nigerian music industry, as record label owners and investors can now feel safe investing in artistes, knowing that their investment is protected by the law. On the other hand, artistes are now expected to sit-up and take their contractual obligations more serious, knowing that breaching their contract might turn out to be a career ending move.

Look at what happened to two women after taking holy water

Since I was a child, I've always fancied holy water, packing as much as I can but after hearing this news I'm going to change my mind!!

According to reports, the 2 elderly Zimbabwean women died after they were forced by their children to attend the church service. During the service, 76-year-old Erita Bhebhe and Jessy Mutero, age unknown, collapsed and died at Baba Wechishanu Wenguwo Tsvuku Church.

B-Metro reports that Prophet Pira, the church leader and custodian had initially said if the women drank the water they would die if they were witches but live if they were not. The two boys who forced the women to the church were caught after they both gave similar stories of their mothers’ deaths, raising the suspicion of family members.

“Joshua and Edica tried to cover up the issue after realising that their mothers died at church. They took them home leaving each one of them in her kitchen hut. The grandchildren, realizing that there was something wrong, told neighbours who then confirmed them dead and alerted other family members.

“The other children, hearing what had transpired prior to their mothers’ deaths reported the matter to the police and their corpses were taken for post-mortem in Bulawayo. The results revealed that the two women died of poisoning,” said a family source.

The two boys confessed the crime to the police after they were arrested.
“Joshua and Edica were picked up by police for questioning and they revealed that their mothers died after drinking water which was given to them by Prophet Pira,” the source added.

He was said to have dressed this way because he needed to inform the house of the passing of the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa.

Pastor talks to Tiwa Savage and her husband Tee Billz about their marital dispute

So far so good lots of people have been showing their concern about the dispute between Tiwa Savage and her husband Tee Billz. With the way it is going, I'm more counselling and advice are still coming in.
Following the lingering marital crisis involving popular singer, Tiwa Savage and her husband, Tunji Balogun, a.k.a TeeBillz, the lover boy “old school” singer-turned- pastor, Felix Aigbe Libarty has  called out  the couple to save themselves and the Nigerian music industry from further embarrassment by resolving  their differences amicably.

*Tiwa and TeeBillz

Specifically, the “Ifeoma and 419” crooner, begged Tiwa Savage to return to her husband quietly despite the emotional pains she’s going through at the moment.

He said, TeeBillz is under serious attack from the pit of hell, and as such, Tiwa should not allow the devil to use  her  husband  to destroy her future.

Speaking further, he said, “It’s one thing to  be famous and it’s another to know how to manage fame. I want  her (Tiwa Savage) to go back to her husband immediately because there is no divorce spiritually except when the man is no more. I want her to know that if God wants to announce any woman that is matured, He will always match  her with a man. In this case, that is what God has done for her.”

“I want Tiwa Savage to begin to understand that whatever is happening to her now is an attack from the pit of hell. Her husband is in deep trouble. I am sure that his pastor has not been able to tell him that he’s under attack. The devil may not attack you directly, it will attack your partner. Spiritually, as I am seeing it, her husband (TeeBillz)  is under attack.

Every behaviour her husband is exhibiting now is  manipulated. The Bible says, you have to be there  for your husband, and your husband will be there for you.  Whatever that is going on now, remains the fact that your husband is being manipulated by spiritual forces that doesn’t want you to grow.  And by the time you walk out of  your marriage, you are giving the devil the opportunity to destroy your life completely” he counselled

Muslims holds a voluntary fasting and praying for success for President Muhammadu Buhari

I've always dumbfounded at the unity in Islamic religion, the unity in them is shown irrespective whether they know you or your tribe or your race.
The President of the organisation, Aliyu Ibrahim Kyautawa, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Sokoto.

“We are praying and fasting every two weeks for peace, tranquility and success of President Muhammadu Buhari who means well for the people of this country.’’

Kyautawa stated that the organisation does not have any link with the President or any of his ministers, nor belonged to any political party.

According to him, our resolve is borne out of love for the country.
“We are not sponsored by anybody and we don’t belong to any political party and we are not doing it for any material gain,’’ he said.

Kyautawa said that the members of the group were convinced that Buhari had the ability to liberate the Nigerian masses from the bondage of poverty, insecurity and bad governance because of his track records.

He explained that the prayer and fasting was first conceived in 2014 when the country was bedeviled by a myriad of challenges.

“This is why we decided to embark on voluntary prayer and fasting every two weeks for peace in the country.

“We are also praying for the success of Gov. Aminu Tambuwal in Sokoto state.

“Buhari has the masses at heart, but his efforts are being frustrated by some unpatriotic Nigerians.

“They have been sabotaging his efforts in a bid to make this nation ungovernable for him, but all their efforts would be in vein,’’ he said.

According to him, the organisation has been sponsoring media campaign to educate the public on the need to also change their attitude and support the government, both morally and spiritually.

Kyautawa said he was optimistic that the hardship being faced by Nigerians would soon be a thing of the past.

Fans of Rangers Football Club not happy with the way they played

The reports that the league leaders drew 1-1 with Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.

The match was a week 15 game in the 2015/2016 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

The furious Rangers’ fans crowded round the players as they were coming out of their dressing room on their way to their bus, saying the players gave them a disappointing evening.

It took the intervention of the stadium security personnel to check and contain the angry fans.

NAN reports that the tension-filled match was goalless until after 85 minutes of play when the centre referee, Thomas Tivkor, awarded a penalty kick to Rangers due to an infringement.

The penalty kick was scored by Rangers’ striker Chisom Egbuchulum.

However, during the added four minutes, a Rangers defender stopped the ball with his hands in the penalty area, prompting the referee to award a penalty kick.

Striker Ajani Ibrahim scored the kick for the visiting team to equalise.

Rangers’ coach Imama Amapakabo said his players underrated the 3SC side by not putting all they have into the game in the first half.

Amapakabo said his side then faced a more difficult second half since they lost chances that should have given them an early and comfortable lead.

“This game is an eye-opener to everybody in the Rangers team not to toy with any team in the NPFL,’’ he said.

Reacting, 3SC’s Assistant Coach, Lateef Yussuf, said the game was a highly technical match.

“However, my boys played to the rule and we are happy to hold Rangers to a 1 – 1 draw in their own home.

“This victory will spur us to more victories as the league progresses, and we are assuring our teeming fans of better days ahead,’’ Yussuf, who led the Oluyole Warriors to Enugu, said.

Gulf of alaska, one of nature's wonder!!!!

It stretches out into the open, one of the best wonder of nature I have in my experience as I journey through life. The "Gulf of Alaska" is an arm of the Pacific Ocean defined by the curve of the southern coast of Alaska, stretching from the Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak Island in the west to the Alexander Archipelago in the east, where Glacier Bay and the Inside Passage are found.

According to the United States Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System, the Gulf of Alaska is bounded on the north by the coast of Alaska and on the south by a line running from the south end of Kodiak Island on the west to Dixon Entrance on the east.

So many times I've come to ask myself how this is possible, two different waters meeting but none 'dares' go over the other for any reason, I guess this was what Nicole Mullen was referring to in a line in one of her song "who told the ocean you can only come this far"  because as far as i'm concerned it is not possible at all,... Don't know about you though!!!!!!

The entire shoreline of the Gulf is a rugged combination of forest, mountain, and a number of tidewater glaciers. Alaska's largest glaciers, the Malaspina Glacier and Bering Glacier spill out onto the coastal line along the Gulf of Alaska. The coast is also heavily indented, with Cook Inlet and Prince William Sound the two largest connected bodies of water, but also including Yakutat Bay and Cross Sound. Lituya Bay is the site of the largest recorded tsunami in history and is a popular sheltered anchorage for fishing boats.

I've read many articles about the "gulf of alaska" and discovered that different people in different organisation have tried coming up with a possible explanation behind this wonder of nature. The Christians will simply say it is a sign or evidence that God exist which of course I don't doubt while the scientists said it is due to difference in density between two waters which is mind disturbing in the sense that if what the scientists said is true then will a Lake water and a sea water not mix when poured into the same bucket???

I don't know if any one has a better explanation but seriously this ought to added to the wonders of the world ##ENIGMA!!!!

Bermuda Triangle##myth or legend???? ##ENIGMA!!!!

We've all heard one story or the other about bermuda triangle I believe but in reality majority of us still don't know how true it is,if it is a bedtime story or a true story that lacks a good historical backing.

The "Bermuda Triangle" is believed to be located off the South-Eastern coast of United States in the Atlantic Ocean, the area is bounded by Miami (in Florida, USA), San Juan (in Puerto Rico), and the north-Atlantic island Bermuda. Each side of the triangle is believed to be roughly 1000 miles long.

It has been reported by different writers, weather channels, news channels and all about the unfortunate events that has been occurring in this particular region. According to my neighbour back then, said she believes or heard that anything that goes above the triangle must be sunk in and when I asked her why, the reply I got was more horrifying, her reply was that because that was where the devil landed when he was thrown from heaven and therefore, it is the headquarter of demons and similar beings.
Scientists all over the world(I believe)  tried to unravel the phenomenon behind this "Bermuda Triangle"  behaviour and they said it was due to negative pressure created in the region, that nothing "sinister" is going on around the region.
The big question then is, what explanation is there behind the missing airplanes, crashed airplanes and all that has been occurring in the region that not even a Part of the airplanes are seen????
So I guess we're still confused as to whether the "Bermuda Triangle" is a myth or a legend ##ENIGMA!!!!!

Ben Carson's siamese twins separation now a legend or should I say Ben Carson's 8th wonder of the world!!!!

Left with me I would have said that this should be the 8th wonder of the world because till date i'm still baffled at this event that took place about 29 years ago, I don't know about you.

The most interesting thing here is that both boys are now men and they are cute too.

For those of you who don't know about the siamese twins separation, this is the story in full;

For months, a team of physicians and nurses had rehearsed for the delicate surgery. For hours they had prepped the two tiny bodies perilously joined at the head. And when it came time on that day in 1987 to put a knife to the large vein connecting them — the most fraught step in the groundbreaking operation to separate infant conjoined twins — Benjamin Solomon Carson, the brilliant young pediatric neurosurgeon who had overseen the babies’ case from the start, offered his scalpel to his boss.

It was a sign of deference and respect — and perhaps, a measure of caution. But Donlin Long, head of neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, refused the gesture. Carson, he had already decided, should make the crucial cut.

“Part of me thought, maybe I should take the knife. If things go badly it would be terrible for the young doctor’s career,” Long recalled this month. “But I also know that if this was a success, if things go well, it would make his reputation, would make him famous, that people would grow up trying to emulate him.”

More than any other moment in a dazzling career, the separation of the Binder twins launched the stardom of Ben Carson. The then-35-year-old doctor walked out of the operating room that day and stepped into a spotlight that has never dimmed, from the post-surgery news conference covered worldwide, through his subsequent achievements in his medical career, to publishing deals and a lucrative career as a motivational speaker — all paving the way to his current moment as a leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination.

But while Carson frequently deploys anecdotes from his compelling life story — a hardscrabble childhood in Detroit, his climb to the Ivy League, his journeys through spiritual faith and advanced medicine — he only occasionally cites and never dwells on the story of Benjamin and Patrick Binder.

Like many stories from the frontiers of medical science, it’s a hard one to fit into an inspirational narrative — a tale of risk and loss and brutally tough options. And although Carson and his team achieved something unprecedented, with long-term benefits for science, it did not result in a happy ending for the Binders.

“In a technological ‘star wars’ sort of way, the operation was a fantastic success,” Carson said in an Associated Press article from 1989. “But as far as having normal children, I don’t think it was all that successful.”

When reached for comment this week, Carson said: “The great reward of using your talents to save a child’s life can be a tremendous high, but you often find that there is nothing you can do to stop the pain of a patient’s journey through life. As a doctor, no matter how far we push medical science, we cannot conquer all pain.”

Updates on the children were limited after they returned to Germany following the surgery. The German magazine Bunte signed an exclusivity deal with the family until the boys turned 18. A search through its archives, in addition to new interviews conducted with members of the family and Carson’s medical colleagues, shows a more complete and complicated portrait of an event that shaped the lives of those involved.

“I will never get over this. . . . Why did I have them separated?” the boys’ mother, Theresia Binder, told the Freizeit Revue, a sister publication of Bunte, in November 1993. “I will feel guilty forever.”

In January 1987, Theresia Binder was eight months pregnant and suicidal.

“I wanted to kill them and myself as well,” she said, according to Carson’s best-selling book “Gifted Hands.” She had just learned that her babies were stuck together and felt as if “a sick, ugly monster” was writhing inside of her.

“I saw the babies [and] noticed only a huge head with two faces,” she told Bunte. “I thought: ‘My God, what will they look like, how will they live?’ ”

She debated swallowing pills. She considered opening up the window of a tall building and jumping out. Instead, on Feb. 2, 1987, she gave birth to her boys. They weighed a combined 8 pounds and 14 ounces. They shared a head, but Theresia’s fear was replaced with a new emotion.

“Not once did we ever not love them,” her husband, Josef, was quoted by Carson as saying in “Gifted Hands.” “They were our sons.”

Doctors informed the parents that if the sons remained joined, these pudgy blond babies would never be able to sit, crawl or turn over. Learning to walk was out of the question. But Johns Hopkins in Baltimore was world-renowned for taking on difficult cases. There they would meet a man who had grown up poor in Detroit, made it to Yale, gotten a medical degree at the University of Michigan, and at the age of 33 had become the youngest chief of pediatric neurosurgery in the country.

“After studying the available information, I tentatively agreed to do the surgery knowing it would be the riskiest and most demanding thing I had ever done,” Carson wrote. “But I also knew it would give the boys a chance — their only chance — to live normally.”

Conjoined twins occur in about one out of every 200,000 births. Almost 60 percent of them die before birth, and an additional 35 percent don’t survive beyond a day. Of all conjoined twins, only about 2 percent are craniophagus, or connected by the head.

Which means that few surgeons have had much practice separating them. So at Hopkins, a team of seven pediatric anesthesiologists, five neurosurgeons, two cardiac surgeons, five plastic surgeons and an array of nurses and technicians spent months practicing on dolls joined at the head by Velcro, according to a 1987 account of the surgery in Newsweek.

The Binder twins were lucky in that they had two brains. It meant that the surgery was at least feasible.

“From the time we started discussing it, we all tried to keep in mind that we wouldn’t proceed with surgery unless we believed we had a good chance of separating the boys without damaging the neurological function of either baby,” Carson wrote in “Gifted Hands.”

On Labor Day 1987, the 7-month-old twins — who, according to Newsweek had been “giggling and kicking since entering Hopkins on September 2” — went in for surgery. For four hours, heart surgeons inserted “hair-thin” tubes into their veins and connected them to heart-lung machines that would keep them alive through surgery. Plastic surgeons sliced into their scalp, removing the bone tissue that connected them. The cardiologists then cut open their chests and removed small amounts of tissue from their heart to use later to construct new veins.

Doctors dropped the babies’ body temperature down to 68 degrees, stopping their hearts and allowing surgeons to operate without blood flow — the first time anyone had tried such a strategy for this type of surgery. A big clock on the wall counted down from an hour: Every minute without a heartbeat beyond the 60-minute mark threatened to cause irreparable damage to the boys.

“When the hour is up, just turn the pumps back on,” Carson told his team, according to his book. “If they bleed to death then they’ll have bled to death, but we’ll know we did the best we could.”

After Long gave him back his scalpel at the pivotal moment, Carson severed the primary thin blue vein that connected the twins. The doctors rapidly set about creating new veins from the heart tissue they had removed earlier. One twin was finished in 57 minutes, the other in 63.

“It got pretty intense in there,” said Bruce Reitz, director of cardiac surgery, according to a Washington Post article from the time. “We tried not to look at the clock.”

Separated for the first time in their lives, Benjamin and Patrick were placed in medically induced comas. The magnitude of this precarious success was lost on no one; a massive media scrum awaited the doctors as they emerged from the operation.

“The success in this operation is not just in separating the twins,” said Mark Rogers, the director of the department of anesthesiology, at the news conference. “Success is producing two normal children.”

The Binders’ early recovery was closely charted in subsequent headlines: “Twins’ Doctors ‘Encouraged’ But Cautious, No Prediction Now For Health of Either,” “Siamese Twins Begin to Wake From Coma And Breathing Alone,” “Twins Face New Crisis,” “Breathing Problems for Twins,” “Fever Slowing Recovery of Separated Twin Boys,” “Separated Twins’ Status Delights Their Doctors; Last 10 Days’ Progress Called Remarkable,” “Separated Twins May Lead Normal Lives, Doctors Say,” “Twins Separated By Surgery Ready to Go Home to Germany.”

And they did go home to Germany, seven months later. And then, news of the Binders almost immediately evaporated. Even Carson lost track of them, he would say later in an interview, noting that he had written letters and never heard back.

Carson, though, remained very much in the news. In 1992 he published “Gifted Hands” — which became a made-for-TV movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr. — and a series of other books in an inspirational or self-help vein. Carson was appointed to lofty boards and commissions; the NAACP gave him its prestigious Spingarn Medal and the White House gave him a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

His fame — in particular for his work with conjoined twins — was such that when the filmmaking Farrelly brothers of “Dumb and Dumber” fame made a comedy, “Stuck on You,” about conjoined twins (played by Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear), they just had to have a Ben Carson cameo — and he signed on, once they agreed to host the movie premiere in Baltimore.

He became a wildly popular figure on the speakers’ circuit, his religious faith and social conservatism popular with black churches and red-state audiences. In 2013 he landed on stage at the National Prayer Breakfast, where his dark warnings of an America in decline were seen as a rebuke to President Obama, sitting just a few feet away — and Carson became the new darling of conservative radio hosts and activists. And now he is a presidential candidate, known for announcing at debates that among the field of rivals he’s “the only one to separate Siamese twins.”

Meanwhile, Carson’s first conjoined twins kept a lower profile back home in Germany.

Their mother would later tell reporters that they came home with the hope, instilled in them by the Johns Hopkins surgeons, that the boys might soon begin crawling, and then hit other milestones.

“‘I took it seriously,’’ she told Freizeit Revue in 1989. “But maybe they just wanted to encourage me.’’

It soon became apparent, though, that the boys were hopelessly delayed, according to a 1993 interview with the Revue. Benjamin would moan occasionally, but Patrick remained completely silent; he had had a setback in the Baltimore hospital when he choked on a piece of food, going without oxygen for a short time. Years later, neither boy could get around on his own or feed himself.

The doctors say they always knew this outcome was a possibility, that the swelling from the surgery and the time without blood flow left the children very much at risk. They say they hoped that the twins would mature into normal lives, but that it was always just a hope.

“We certainly made the risks clear,” Long said. “And we made it clear that it had never been done before.”

When Freizeit Revue caught up with Theresia in November 1993, she said her children’s brain damage had destroyed her marriage.

“Josef has never been able to cope with this blow of fate,” she said in the little-seen interview written in German and translated into English. She said Josef, who has since died, according to Theresia’s brother, became an alcoholic, lost his job, cheated on her and spent all their money, leaving her and the children to live “from hand to mouth.”

“He never touched them,” she said. “He was appalled.” Unable to care for the twins on her own, she brought them to a home for disabled children, where they became wards of the state.

“The first thing I think of every morning is ‘today I’m going to get them,’ ” she said in 1993. “But then I can’t.” She said she had lost her faith in God. She remarried and had another child, and in 1993 was pregnant with another.

“When we go for a walk with the children in their wheelchair, people look at me, as if I’m a monster,” she said. “I need this child. To heal. I still have to prove to myself that I’m not a monster.”

Katharina Korn was a neighbor of Theresia Binder in Ravensburg, a town in southern Germany famous for its picturesque medieval buildings, until Theresia moved away about eight years ago. Korn recalled seeing the toll the twins’ conditions took on Theresia.

“She was feeling bad, because her children were severely disabled, much worse than before the operation,” Korn told The Post. “They promised her much more than what the actual outcome was.”

Patrick Binder died sometime in the past decade, Theresia’s brother Peter Parlagi said. Benjamin is 28 now and still cannot speak, but according to Parlagi is doing “relatively well.” He’s grown up; his hair is now dark. His younger half-brother, Florian Vosseler, still checks in on him two or three times a year, often with their mother, who declined to be interviewed for this story. They’ll take walks, feed him cake and help him drink coffee, which he prefers with extra milk.

“It’s difficult to communicate with him,” Vosseler said. “But you can tell by the way he looks at you that he’s happy to see you.”

At the office for his plastic surgery practice in Fairfax, Va., Craig Dufresne has hung a framed copy of a 1987 New York Times article trumpeting the 22-hour surgery that he participated in with his longtime friend Carson. As he sees it, the doctors never explicitly promised the Binders anything, though he can understand how they got their hopes up.

“We said that if all goes well, they would be completely normal,” said Dufresne, who went on the initial trip to examine the twins in Germany. “And we really thought there was a good chance it would turn out with a happy ending.”

Dufresne said the plan was for the twins to return to Hopkins a year later, but that once they left for Germany it was impossible to keep track of the family. When there was no news, he figured there must have been bad news. He and others on the team would have to take the surgery for what it was: a big step forward for medical science, even without the ideal result.

“My job as a doctor is to make sick people well, and when I fail to do that, regardless of exactly why, I still failed,” Long, the former head of neurosurgery, said in a phone interview about the Binder surgery. “So in that way, the simple answer is no, I do not think it was a success.”

The surgery did prove that it was technically possible for twins conjoined at the head to be separated and for both to survive. It created a blueprint for other doctors to follow in the future. Carson himself would go on to participate in four other similar surgeries — one of which, a 1997 surgery of Zambian twins, left both patients not only alive but neurologically normal.

“You can’t go into something like this with a pessimistic attitude,” Carson told Johns Hopkins Magazine after a 2004 separation of twins joined at the head. “A lot of younger guys are learning a lot, pushing on the next border, which is how progress is made. We all act as stepping stones.”

Carson would go on to perform hundreds of other difficult and impressive surgeries, including operating on babies inside the womb and removing large chunks of the brains of children plagued by repetitive seizures.

But it was the Binder twins who launched Carson onto the national stage he now dominates, barely three years after retiring from surgery.

“If I hadn’t given him the knife, he probably wouldn’t be there today,” Long said. “He still would have received a great deal of credit, but it would have been divided. It became the thing that got him everybody’s notic
